Baroness Shirley Williams

“The proliferation of nuclear weapons and climate change are the greatest threats to the survival of humankind. We have only a few years, at most a decade or so, to control and eventually abolish nuclear weapons. The support of concerned citizens in the UK and elsewhere is vital. The Churches have already played a crucial part in breaking the bonds of debt on poor countries and their leadership on this issue is equally important and urgently needed.”

Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima

“I am delighted that the churches in the UK have contributed to the call for governments to commit to a world free of nuclear weapons.

“There is a danger that we consider nuclear weapons to simply be an unfortunate fact of life that we can do nothing about. This would be a grave mistake. Now is the time to map out the road to global zero. At the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference governments must clearly demonstrate their stated commitment to the elimination of all nuclear weapons.

“I hope that the churches in the UK will do everything in their power to mobilise their congregations to let the government know that they are ready to live in a nuclear-weapon-free world.”

Lord Anderson of Swansea

"I warmly congratulate the Methodist and other Churches on this most important initiative.  Along with climate change, nuclear proliferation is a key challenge to the very future of mankind.  Iran aside, after the disappointment of the Conference in 2005, there is now a far better atmosphere for progress because of the increasing co-operation between the USA and Russia and the excellent work done by the British Government.  Every strength to the Churches in keeping this issue high on the agenda of concern."

The campaign has been further welcomed by the leaders of many UK church denominations.
