Why now?
- In May 2010 governments will come together in New York for the NPT Review Conference.
- There is potential for a massive reduction in the global stocks of nuclear weapons if the US and Russia implement the START follow on treaty
- The development of civil nuclear power is certain to spread to many new countries in the coming years extending knowledge and expertise in nuclear technology
- There is an increasing potential for fissile material to fall into the hands of those who would seek to use it for acts of terrorism
- There are now 6 nuclear weapons free zones, backed by binding international treaties. With the ratification of the Africa Nuclear Weapons Free Zone in 2008 the whole of the southern hemisphere is now covered by such zones.
